Category: Comparisons
Compare NECA's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures from the original Mirage comics versus the classic movie designs. Learn which line suits your collection style.
Quick answer
NECA's Mirage Comics TMNT figures capture the raw, black-and-white aesthetic of Eastman and Laird's original comics, while movie figures recreate the iconic live-action looks. Choose Mirage for gritty, authentic comic nostalgia, or movie figures for screen-accurate detail.
Art Style and Inspiration
The Mirage Comics line, including figures like Michelangelo (The Wanderer) and Old Man Raphael, stays true to the original black-and-white comic art. These figures feature sharp, high-contrast paint decos and packaging illustrated by Kevin Eastman himself. In contrast, movie figures mimic the textured, colored suits from the live-action films, with more shading and realistic weathering.
Accessories and Character Variety
Mirage figures often include unique, comic-authentic accessories. Michelangelo (The Wanderer) comes with swords, spear, kama, nunchucks, and extra hands, while Old Man Raphael includes a soft goods cape, removable hat, and all-new weapons. Movie figures typically include standard ninja weapons and interchangeable heads. The Mirage line also offers deeper cuts like Old Man Raphael, which you won't find in movie sets.
Packaging and Display
Mirage figures come in special comic-book themed window boxes with art by Kevin Eastman, making them display-ready even in the box. Movie figures use standard NECA clamshell or window packaging. If you keep figures boxed, the Mirage packaging is a clear collectible advantage.
Tradeoffs at a Glance
- Comic Accuracy vs. Screen Accuracy: Mirage figures use high-contrast decos and comic packaging; movie figures use realistic textures and colors. You can't get both from a single figure. Choose based on whether you prefer the source material's original art or the film's interpretation.
- Character Rarity: Mirage line includes deep-cut characters like Old Man Raphael and The Wanderer, while movie lines focus on main cast and classic villains. Movie figures are easier to complete as a set. If you want unique variants, go Mirage. For a full team set, movie figures are more straightforward.
- Price and Availability: Mirage figures like Michelangelo (The Wanderer) at $27.35 and Old Man Raphael at $24.14 offer competitive pricing compared to movie figures which often retail for $30-$40. Mirage figures may be harder to find after initial release. Mirage figures provide good value, but act fast if you see them in stock.
